Boston Light (second) is built.
1783
Built of rubble and stone, the 75-foot tower is located on Little Brewster Island. The lighthouse initially employs lamps with wicks soaked in fish or whale oil for light. A new Fresnel lens beam that can be seen 27 miles out at sea is installed in 1859. The fog signal canon is replaced by a bell in in 1852 [1851-BF]. An interior, 76-step, spiral staircase is built in 1844. The building is raised to 89 feet in 1856 and to its current height of 102 feet in 1989.
